Land Speed Record Progress – 1000 kph to 1000 mph

At CDS most of us are engineers, as are many of you, our customers. We’re so amazed and delighted by new engineering achievements that we want to share them with you just in case you haven’t already seen them. Enjoy!

Bloodhound LSR is a UK-based project aiming to break the world land speed record using the most advanced straight-line racing car ever built. In creating this jet and rocket powered car, the team uses advances in engineering design, materials and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

This year Bloodhound rounded out its Kalahari test program in style, hitting 628 mph (1,010 km/h) in its final 2019 run across the Hakskeen Pan track in South Africa. In late 2020 they plan to return to South Africa to break the current land-speed record of 763.035 mph and they hope 1,000 mph too.

UK magazine The Engineer asked their readers what the most important benefits of the project are likely to be. “The STEM and educational impact of the programme has often been lauded, and our readers were largely in agreement that this will be Bloodhound’s most prominent legacy. Almost two-thirds (62 per cent) said that inspiring tomorrow’s engineers will be the most important benefit. A boost for UK engineering’s standing was the next most popular answer, with 18 per cent of the vote. The remaining 20 per cent of respondents were equally split between those who felt the technological spin-offs would be the greatest benefit, and those who think there will be no appreciable benefits at all.”The Engineer Magazine - Bloodhound survey results
